i cheated on my cat this weekend. yes, i admit it. i visited a friend's new kitty and came home with the furry evidence of cat cuddling all over my sweater. petey sniffed a few times and hissed twice, backing away. i washed my hands, fabrezed the offending sweater and hung it in the closet. he was moody all evening. i learned something new about my kitty this week. he is very territorial and i am going to think twice about ever introducing a second cat into our family....

highlights of this weekend:
lunch & walk with old college roommates on the waterfront in tacoma
an evening performance of the drawer boy at tacoma actor's guild and drinks at the bar on the top of the tacoma sheraton hotel downtown. what a view pretty view!

so this weekend i found myself foolishly hesitant to join my friends in an adventure to olympus, a korean women's spa in tacoma. in my flimsy cotton robe and unflattering pink cap, i mellowed out enough in the heated earth energy rooms to brave the "no clothes" whirpools and sauna rooms. i am so glad my friends dragged me there. i went in growling like a pissed cat and came out floating on steaming herbal clouds of bliss. i can't wait to go again and get a full body scrub!

this is my guy.
also answers to petey, peters, petey-weety and all manner of cutesy
names when food is involved. everyone should own someone furry.
fur therapy is vastly underrated.
for the discriminating pet owner, i appreciate fetch and george.

i just found out that a pixies
reunion show is scheduled for this year's bumbershoot
festival on sept. 6th. [their 1992 split led to frank
black and the breeders]
also underground comic legend of american splendor fame, harvey pekar will be making an appearence.
i am so glad i regularly scan the newspaper in the morning. i might have missed this!

this weekend i attended a hat/scarf party for a friend's mom who is fighting breast cancer and having to undergo chemotherapy treatments. since she can't decide to not have breast cancer she can decide when she'll loose her hair so part of the party included a headshaving ceremony. with all her friends cheering her on, it was a beautiful moment. i hope she had as much fun at the party as i did.
need to buy a hat for a friend or yourself? check out the village hat shop!
by the way, all the fab wiser women in our lives should check out the red hat society. such a cool group of kickin' ladies!

i just read in the tacoma news tribune that pre-chopped "tear-free" onions will be hitting the market. good grief, is society so convenience-focused that we have forgotten how to avoid tearing eyes while chopping onions? burn a candle near your cutting board to avoid those tears, jeez. or you try this option.
by the way, i volunteer where this guy works. hum, now it's all just getting too trendy...

martha may be a jailbird,
but she knows how to make the best hard-boiled eggs
i ever had. i followed her instructions for hard-boiled/cooked
eggs and got the most fluffy, lovely yellow yolked eggs!
perfect for an egg salad mixture.
now you too can try! [from issue #2 of everyday food]
1. place 4 large eggs in a saucepan, and add enough water to cover them by an inch (no cheating). 2. bring water to a simmer (not boil) over high heat. remove from heat, cover and let stand 12 minutes. 3. drain and rinse under cold running water. unpeeled eggs can be kept refringerated for one week. martha suggests you call them hard-cooked eggs because there is no actual boiling in a hard-boiled egg.
follow instructions exactly and you will have perfect eggs. i promise.

friday night review: two out of three bands i saw
friday at the tractor
tavern were awesome. glorious
opened the set and when they first started playing,
i didn't think much - but then the song "california"
was played. might be biased as a former californian,
but i loved that tune. they signed a record deal
earlier this week, so i expect to hear more about
them.
kim virant was also great, this was her ep-release party. very talented woman with a light-hearted stage presence - from her set i most enjoyed "letting go" and her rendition of "son of a preacher-man"
not too much to say about sweet lou who closed the set. we left before they were done...
