in keeping with my self-taught culinary school egg lessons (previous studies included the proper way to hard-cook an egg) i finally managed to make fried eggs the other day for the first time ever. i always used to burn the bottom before the yolk cooked, but not this time! it got so that i only made egg scrambles, and though i made some killer scrambled eggs w/ veggies and cheese topped with salsa (yum), it was sort of by default as i wasn't succesful with any other form of egg. i attribute my fried egg success to cooking with a well-seasoned iron skillet on a gas range and using real butter. now all i want to do is make fried eggs with cracked pepper every morning.

i've also been enjoying a daily cup of real english tea sent by some friends in washington.

more home spa recipes to try:

gardener's hand scrub: mix 1 tsp. olive oil, juice of 1/2 lemon, 2 tsp. honey and 2 drops almond extract. massage into hands and wrap with a towel. rinse after 15 minutes. the lemon cleans and the oil and honey soften.

hot stone foot bath: place marbles or smooth, clean stones (from your yard or wherever) in a basin; fill with hot water. add 1 tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 tbs. buttermilk (or milk) powder, 2 tbs. baking soda, and 1/8 tsp. cinnamon and mix. dunk feet and roll over stones, concentrating on sore spots. soak for 15 min.

macho muscle rub: mix 1 tbs. olive oil, 1/4 tsp. ground ginger and a pinch of cayenne pepper and hot mustard powder. let stand for 15 minutes. massage into muscles, avoiding eyes and sensitive or broken skin. the heat of the spices helps alleviate muscle aches.

nothing exciting happening lately other than beating back lingering congestion symptoms i'm attributing to mono.
however, you can never have too many electrical outlets! though my space is not yet completely unpacked and decorated (god, it's taking me forever) i am now savoring the luxury that is 7 more outlets. i can plug in stereo, lamps and alarm clocks with abandon!

this weekend i tried a candied orange slice dipped in dark chocolate for the first time while out with my brother, his girlfriend and a friend of his. it was very tasty, much better than the kabobs we had for our dinner. it was odd to be standing outside talking and people-watching with nothing more than a light sweater top on in the midst of a january evening. i mean, there's really no winter here. really.

i also got a lead on some local indie music and i'm getting more excited about exploring los angeles.

i visited arcadia's newly-remodeled santa anita mall, uh, i mean the westfield shopping center, and was momentarily confused about how to get inside. luckily i figured it out before the pouring rain hit and spent the next few hours in a shopping delirium. i don't power-shop like that often and when i do, i seem to enjoy it more alone. my best after-the-holidays-sales find: chocolate-orange lip balm at the body shop. yum, yum!

ant update: the damm ants waded through the water moat i created around the cat food bowl and were swarming my space so i busted out the chemical spray. bu-bye ants!
