on the way to and from las vegas i stopped half-way at a truck stop to pick up my favorite traveling snack - flamin' hot cheetos and mt. dew (in a can if possible). i had some cheetos left when i arrived back home and the kitty was very curious. he likes regular cheetos so he jumped up for a snack and - get this - actually ate about 5 of them! hot spice and all! i'm so proud to have passed on my love of spicy foods, but i wonder how good that is for him...

i completely forgot to mention that before i left for vegas, i saw elton john and tim rice's production of aida when it toured through pasadena. what a performance! a perfect blend of theatre, rock music and opera. elton and tim make a few satisfying changes to verdi's original and throw in some wonderful sets.

while in las vegas, i enjoyed my first ever hookah pipe (strawberry) with my brothers and a friend. we smoked these lovely elaborate pipes in the coolest lounge ever, as you can see. it was so smooth and tons of fun, though i'm not regular smoker.

the rest of the night was a blur of too many cosmos at a dueling piano bar in hotel new york, new york and a sighting of alan thicke*. i actually had to concentrate on walking straight there at the end. it was bad and tacky and so very vegas.

*apparently, alan was in vegas to do a reality couples show or something. he looked much shorter in real life, had wildy thick hair and was too skinny!

one of the more interesting things about living in pasadena, ca is the um, "native" yellowhead amazon parrots that careen around here in loud, squawking flocks. ledgend has it that the parrots originally came from simpson's gardenland and bird farm, fleeing a 1959 fire that destroyed the facility.

i've decided that part of the appeal of pizza is eating it on a floppy paper plate with plenty of hot pepper flakes.

after spending the last few weeks as care-giver for grandma who recently broke her hip, i am taking 1.5 weeks off for a trip to las vegas. it's mostly for working purposes (a temp job at a trade show) but i'm hoping that i'll have time to enjoy some urban explorations. i've already scouted out some adventures but i'll post about them when i get back in case they don't work out.
