los angeles is finally achieving the level of coolness i enjoyed in seattle. i attended the first mini-craft fair event by the good folks of felt club and scored a cute, pink felt kitty pouch and a knitted monster pouch. they hold the essentials in my purse - lip balm and my library and coffee cards.
i also got a chance to hear demonika and the darklings at the legendary mr. t's bowl which i've read about in various music history tomes. very cool.5/26/2006 11:12:00 AMthe boy turned 31 yesterday. so for a fun surprise we headed out to the pier in santa monica after hooking him up with some homemade birthday gifts (because those are the best kind). i made him a t-shirt that says "d'oh" in silver glitter letters (he loves the simpsons) and a felt-stuffed chocolate donut with sprinkles. btw, here's a link to a live webcam for santa monica with the image updated every 10 min! we tried on funny sunglasses (i almost bought some that looked like catwoman's mask but there weren't the right color) and walked the length of the pier enjoying the buskers. you can buy paint daubed landscapes on glass and have your likeness molded into a clay bust even. i am so gonna do that next time. we rode the ferris wheel and enjoyed the lovely beach view. we fueled up on delicious corn dogs with lots of ketchup and mustard and drank yummy cherry lemonade at the original hot dog on a stick while watching several sets of beach volleyball and feeding the birds. armed with three rolls of quarters, we hick the arcade. the boy won me a stuffed teddy with his sweet mole-whacking skills and proceeded to kick my butt at almost every game we played. my skeeball talents began to improve as i channeled my inner child's chuck-e-cheese muscle memory after several games. we played pinball, mario kart, sharpshooting and checked out a peep show. i finally won two games of air hockey (yes!) and was even brave enough to try dance, dance revolution for the first time. i was laughing so hard i didn't get past the second level. that game is work, but a lot of fun! we ended our day 'o fun in the sun with a bunch of photobooth pictures and pooled our winning tickets for a nylon sleeve the boy can wear that looks like he got a whole sleeve tatooed. we checked out the coffee bean and tea leaf's wares and headed back for a tasty sushi dinner with the boy's parents. we caught a late showing of thanks for smoking as a finale for the day. i had soo much fun and i think the boy did too.5/10/2006 12:08:00 PMjen's wedding in las vegas was one of the classiest affairs i've been to in a long while. not only was it great to see her looking so happy and amazingly beautiful, the boy and i enjoyed two days of playing in sin city.
we visited the elvis-a-rama museum (which will be closing and moving in august so hurry & see it before it's gone!) and enjoyed a relaxing and romantic gondola ride at the venetian with a hilarious and snarky gondolier that quoted wayne's world movie lines and sung to us. we also caught the fremont street experience light show and enjoyed a half-yard strawberry margarita (whee!) and played some slot machines and black jack. we headed back there on sunday for a shrimp and crab cocktail and tried a fried twinkie (yum!). fremont has the best vintage vegas casinos and atmosphere. i our attempts to play bingo with the blue-haired local biddies was frustrated by technical difficulties but we did enjoy a lovely mexican dinner at ti and wandered in the richness of the wynn casino.
i left exhausted but with lots of great memories & pictures, a gold elvis necklace, a souvenir elvis beanie baby, and a red, fuzzy heart-shaped stuffed pillow with the 'welcome to las vegas' logo for the shagmobile. yea for vegas weddings!5/02/2006 04:57:00 PM
