today i ran into typical Los Angeles-style traffic on my street - film crews with their huge equipment trucks, caterers, lights, and lots of No Parking! signs.

they're filming a purina doggy food commercial next door. this isn't the first time that filming has happened in my neighborhood. it's kinda cool, kinda annoying and verry L.A.

i made a delicous summer watermelon salad last night as taken from the food network website. it was really healthy, low fat and tasty!

Tasty watermelon salad
*****************************
1 (5-pound) watermelon
1 Vidalia or other sweet onion
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint
4 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
6 whole mint sprigs

Cut the flesh from the melon and cut into bite size pieces, removing and discarding the seeds, and set aside. Peel and slice the onion into rings. In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, salt, pepper, and whisk until salt is dissolved. Slowly whisk in the olive oil, a few drops at a time. Add in the chopped mint, taste, and adjust seasonings. In a large bowl, combine the melon, onion, and feta. Pour the dressing over the melon mixture and toss gently until everything is coated and evenly mixed. Garnish with mint sprigs. To serve, divide salad among individual plates and garnish with mint leaves.

does this look like the face of a killer?

the number of mice rhumba has caught in the last four days = 3

i'm proud of my vicious hunter. i'm beginning to think she's found a mice stash somewhere..the most recent kill was gently laid down by my bed this morning and i probably stumbled over it (stepped on it?) in my sleepy dash to the gym at 5:30 am, ew!

i didn't find the body until i came back to the bedroom later this morning to change for work, ugg. this hunting thing seems to agree with her, she's slimmed down is looking quite fit. i'm using her as inspiration to get myself back in work-out mode....

this weekend i...

shopped for wedding rings with the boy in the Los Angeles Jewelry District.
got my bi-monthy facial from carol.
enjoyed our first (huge!) straberry snow and fish-shaped waffle stuffed with sweet cream custard at genki living - yum!
tasted locally brewed craftsman beers at lucky baldwins british pub in old town pasadena with the family for dad's birthday celebration.
ate pinkberry frozen yogurt with blueberries!
shopped with mom for fancy dresses while everyone else enjoyed a chalk festival at the paseo pasadena (outdoor mall).
worked my designs for the wedding invites!

whew.

this morning while waiting in line for coffee and a pastry at euro pane (my new favorite morning stop) i got a compliment on my dashboard, ha!

the boy was a super-hero and rescued me from what might have been a wedding planning meltdown. i was stumped and stymied by an obstacle in our Perfect Day planning process and the sweet guy that he is, found a way around it when i had just about given up. my clever bunny! swoon.

weekend recap: the boy and i enjoyed a quick trip up to san luis obispo to visit with my brothers and enjoy an evening of entertainment with carol channing in which i learned the first lady of musical comedy was born in seattle, wa. this probably explains why i like her so. i did get a chance to see her in an encore tour of "hello dolly" several years ago and loved that she did the most famous number, hello dolly a second time because the audience gave her a 5 min. standing ovation after the first time she sang it.

we dashed up last minute on saturday night, enjoyed hanging out with the brother, the brother's dog and the brother's really friendly cat. we slept in, lazed about in the country setting my brother has nestled himself in, picked up a second brother and headed out to avila beach to taste the clover-pressed coffee at joe mama's coffee shop. i'm a sucker for latte art so i ordered a vanilla latte (and got a foam heart!) while the boys all enjoyed various drip coffee from the clover machine. we people-watched, walked around, checked out the sea life and soaked up some sun.

late lunch/early dinner was at the spyglass inn restaurant where we enjoyed the sun, killer water views, flocks of pelicans and some tasty seafood. i had lobster and shrimp soft tacos. the boy ate fried baby squids, clams, fish, and calamari. then we ran some errands, changed and headed to the show at cal poly's performance center. a very nice, relaxing if somewhat last minute escape. mental note: must enjoy the SLO life more often!
