ooh, i fear this little blog is in need of an overhaul and redesign, if only to inspire me to write more regularly.

these days i'm enjoying the winter sun in the mornings, cuddling with my furry orange cat, drinking lots of caffinated beverages, over-indulging in leftover halloween sweets at the work place and dreaming about cooking.

the boy and i subscribed to a weekly organic CSA box. only, we've been doing it every other week because really, this subscription to seasonal veggies that i'd never normally purchase is taking a lot out of me. instead of being exhilerated by strange greens and new vegetables, i'm slightly overwhelmed and perplexed. my first reaction is of course, to hole up in bed reading fiction and drinking tea.

for two weeks i battled with okra, squashes and kale and at one point, eggplant was gaining the upper hand. luckily, the boy saved the day with a clever eggplant curry stir fry that rescued my faith in this system...i must say this tag-team thing is about the best bit about marriage!

but really, finding new and interesting ways to incorporating wintery greens into our diets is a (mostly) fun food challenge. enter the winter soups! last week, we enjoyed a short talk by anna thomas, author of love soup, who inspired us with tastings of two delicious soups and great kitchen wisdoms. in response, my boy immediately tried out a delicious butternut squash and ginger soup recipe that i've been enjoying.

this week: thanksgiving comes early! due to schedule restrictions, my brother and his wife are coming out to celebrate with us a week early and we're squeezing in thanksgiving lunch this saturday. i'm on mashed potato duty for the family potluck.

it's been a whirlwind of activity recently (did i mention the water-heater explosion and subsequent carpet cleaning?) and i'm soo looking forward to next week's two days off work to clean, organize and sort through my possessions.

i've decided that even though southern california has no real seasons, (hello, 75 degree+ weather in october!) there is a difference in the light during fall/winter. it's a little brighter, colder and more direct. i've been enjoying it streaming through my kitchen windows while i boil water for tea in the mornings.

halloween festivities at my parent's house were extremely successful. i hope to post some video and pictures soon.
